Photos: Nigerian drug lord sentenced to 27 years in Cambodia loses appeal today
A Cambodian Court of Appeals on Tuesday, December 6th, upheld the sentence of a Nigerian drug trafficking convict. Precious Chineme Nwoko (pictured in court today) was sentenced to 27 years imprisonment in Cambodia in 2014...
The court upheld his prison term, ruling that it was appropriate and in accordance with Cambodian law...
Khieu Vann, the lawyer for Taylor, told reporters that the appeals court’s decision was an injustice and that he would consult with his client to see if she wished to appeal to the Supreme Court. Asked today by journalists why he used dating scams to turn women into drug mules, Nwoko became enraged, according to a report by Australia’s Sydney Morning Herald "Are you stupid? Get out of here.
You think you can come here and ask questions while I am jail," he shouted at Luke McMahon, a Melbourne writer who has revealed Taylor’s plight in an exclusive story for Fairfax Media. Nwoko, a ringleader in a heroin smuggling cartel in Cambodia was arrested for handing a backpack containing 2.2 kilos (4.8 pounds) of heroin to two women, 41-year-old Australian Yoshe Ann Taylor and 19 year old French Charlene Savarino, for onward transportation to an unidentified man in Australia.
Both women were however arrested in 2013 at Phnom Penh International Airport. Judge Kor Vandy at Phnom Penh Municipal Court who presided over their case said Nwoko and the two women were guilty of ‘cross-border smuggling of illegal drugs and thereafter sentenced Nwoko’s 19year old girlfriend Savarino to 25 years in jail, while 41 year old Taylor was handed 23 years. They all denied the drug belonged to them.
NYSC attributes death of Kano corp member, Ifedolapo Oladepo, to untreated infection
Authorities of the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, have attributed the death of Late Ifedolapo Oladepo, a corp member of the 2016 Batch ‘B’, who died at the National Youth Service Corps orientation camp in Kano, to an untreated renal sepsis infection. This is according to investigations carried out by a panel of Inquiry set up to look into the cause of her death.
The panel's report was presented today by the Minister of Youth and Sports, Solomon Dalung and Director General of the NYSC, Brig-General Suleiman Kazaure, in Abuja. Ifedapo's death which occurred on November 29th, made headline news following allegations that she died due to negligence from the medical team in the camp.
Speaking to newsmen at the presentation of the report by the investigation panel, Kazaure attributed Ifedolapo’s death to her “refusal to disclose an ailment she had been battling with before resuming to camp.” “It is clear that the deceased had an ailment which she did not disclose.
From the doctors’ report, the corps member died of renal sepsis occasioned by infection. Even, to the untrained, kidney infections do not develop and degenerate to the level of mortality in three days (i.e 7th to 29th November, 2016). The deceased first appeared at the camp clinic with complaints of headache and fever, which she said she had been experiencing for two days. On examination, the doctors on duty noticed rashes on her legs, which she claimed started appearing as a result of her use of a second-hand knickers she bought without first washing it.
Doctors noticed increase in the rashes on her legs, the deceased still dismissed it as a reaction to usage of a second-hand knicker. By this time, she had been vomiting. Therefore, she was admitted at the camp clinic and treated with Drazamol injection and Piriton to soothe her body pains as she was already on malaria drugs.” According to Kazaure, after her case degenerated, she was immediately referred to Gwarzo General Hospital for further treatment, where, after examination, “the doctor concluded that the deceased had kidney infection probably due to untreated urinary tract infection.”
“The investigation showed that the deceased responded well until about 2:00am on 29th November when her condition worsened, and her body began to show noticeable signs of fluid retention. She was thereafter placed on oxygen as the doctors battled to stabilise her for the long journey to Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital

Mother and daughter killed at a pedestrian crossing by driver who ignored traffic light
A lorry driver, Neville Fletcher, ignored a red light at a pedestrian crossing, leading to the death of a mother-of-two and her daughter. A CCTV camera on the street captured Mr. Fletcher as he ran into 43-year-old Zena Jackson and her six-year-old daughter, Cidalia, near Stanley Street in Spring Bank, Hull, UK.
When Fletcher arrived before the Hull Magistrate Court, the presiding Judge, Jeremy Richardson QC, said that no sentence imposed on the offender can make up for the loss the family has suffered. Fletcher’s lawyer pleaded on his client’s behalf saying that he has been a decent man all his life and that Fletcher does not understand how he ran the red light. The 55-year-old is said to be both devastated and remorseful.
Speaking about her mother, Sadie, the surviving child of the deceased said, "She had a brilliant sense of humour and used to laugh and joke all the time. She was just funny. When you did something bad, she was a real mum, but when you were good, she was like a friend. She loved being a mum, but she was like a kid herself sometimes. I'm going to really miss her."
Sadie also spoke about her sister, Cidalia, in flowery terms, saying; "Cidalia had a great imagination and we only learnt after she died that she had won a writing competition. The story was about a mermaid."
The lorry driver admitted to two counts of causing death by careless driving. He has been jailed for 14 months and banned from driving for five years and seven months.

Video: Live Cockroach pulled out from a woman's ear
A Chinese woman identified as Su, had a cockroach pulled out from her ear after it crawled in while she was sleeping. The woman who reside at Huaihua City's Hecheng District told the doctors that she didn't know the exact moment the cockroach crawled into her ear but that it was still alive and continued to crawl and scratch.
She had earlier tried to remove the insect herself but only made the insect move deeper into her ear every time she reached it with a cotton bud.
When she got to the hospital, the doctors had to spray chemicals in her ear in order to subdue the insect before it could be removed. After few minutes of discomfort, the doctors were finally able to pull out the cockroach from her ear.
Head of the hospital’s Ear Nose and Throat (ENT) department, Meng Jie said: "The patient came in complaining of pain in her ear, claiming that an insect had crawled inside it - and that it was still moving. We spotted the cockroach deep in her ear canal - its legs were still moving - and pulled it out after giving [the patient] some local anaesthetics."
He also advised homeowners to avoid placing snacks or other foods on their bedside tables, and urged individuals to seek medical attention instead of trying to remove the pests by themselves.
